Light Bulb Sculpture

A zeros waste creation that will be the topic of conversation when people enter the room - making sculptures out of light bulbs themselves. Even simple shapes look great and the other blubs act as great shades.

First of, what you'll need

  • Light Bulbs - Frosted ones look better but clear is good too, as many as your sculpture needs but well make a cube in this examples so 3x3 (minus one for the centre one) = 26 bulbs
  • Silicon Gel Glue - Clear or frosted too - you can normally pick these up pretty quickly and cheaply at any hardware store.
  • A cable with a baynet fixture on one end and a plug on the other (with a switch too if you want).

The hardest part of this projects is picking a cool shape that will work well, the only trick is to make sure as many of the ends of the bulbs are sticking outwards. Let your imagination run wild but for our eaxmple we'll use a boring cube, but it still looks pretty cool.

So you've worked out what shape to do, grab your first bulb add a good glob of glue and attached the second bulb. Don't press the blubs completely together, leave about 5mm of glue between the bulbs for a bit of flexibility. Now this glue take a little bit to dry (12ish hours) so depending on your shape you may need to do this in a few sittings. For our sculpture, the cube, glue three together, another three and so on in the first sitting. Like so...

Once you do a few of these you can start to see the shape coming together quickly and easily. So afterwards, you have all you blubs together in a sculpture with all the ends sticking out. The next bit is lighting it up. If your an electrician you can can put these together cheaply yourself but you can also buy these whole.

Now you just need to plug it in and attach it to one of the bulbs. A little trick is is works much better if turn the sculpture so the bulb you have plugged in is at the back and the rest works as a shade. Now enjoy and when one bulb dies plug in the next!
