The living room tends to be the focal point of the household. It's where you spend the most time and where you want to relax, entertain and enjoy yourself. This means that you will be using these lights more than any others in your house.

As the living room is the focal point of the house it is also the the place to show of with your lighting. You want the fancy light shades/lamps etc and if you want any special effects etc the living room is the room for it. Also the more time you spend in a room naturally leads to a larger number of different tasks so this is another room where your personality comes into it and you need to analysis your hobbies and habits. For most people there are three or four main activities.

  1. Watching TV - When you are watching TV you need a medium amount of light so you can see the room yet the TV is not washed out. To dark and you'll damage your eyes.
  2. Reading - You need a focused bright light with a general medium light level in the room for you favorite reading spots. Make sure that you sitting doesn't create a shadow on the reading area. Also you
  3. Hobbies - If your a knitter, drawer or an avid nobbiest a spot light on your favorite spot to sit is just what you need.
  4. Entertaining - For the end of an evening table lamps or other items are perfect to set the mood. Nothing too startling but enough to see by.

With the huge variety of tasks this is the perfect room for a dimmer so you can change the lighting levels to the needs, lamps to focus light and perhaps even accent lighting in bookshelves and display cases.
