Description

Product Description

English-Spanish bilingual editions of titles in Free Spirit’s popular Best Behavior series.

The toddler years are full of growth and smiles and sweetness—but also tantrums. With toddlers, yelling, screaming, wailing, and flailing are a normal part of life. Very young children don’t yet have the words to express strong feelings, and they’re still learning social skills. This board book helps little ones understand why it’s better to use an indoor voice—“so people hear the words and not the yelling”—and how to calm down and ask for help so they can get what they need. Also includes tips for parents and caregivers.

The Best Behavior series uses simple words and delightful full-color illustrations to guide children to choose peaceful, positive behaviors. Select titles are available in two versions: a durable board book for ages baby–preschool, and a longer, more in-depth paperback for ages 4–7. Kids, parents, and teachers love these award-winning books. All include helpful tips and ideas for parents and caregivers.

From School Library Journal

Toddler/PreS—This gentle reminder that there''s an appropriate volume for indoor activities also addresses the emotions children might be feeling when they yell (excitement, anger) and how to quiet them, while also explaining how they can still be heard. Bold, colorful artwork features a diverse group of preschoolers.

Review

“This approach has great potential to help kids who may get a little angry from time to time (and who doesn’t?), emphasizing the importance of words instead of tone.” ― Kirkus Reviews

This book is wonderful in that it communicates the message that voices are not for yelling, but does not guilt the child into different behavior. Finding books like these that communicate a positive and peaceful parenting message, while giving more productive options than just saying "no" or "don''t do that" for calming down (taking deep breaths, telling someone who you feel, etc), is not particularly easy, but this book nails it! I have already shared this book with many other parents. It hasn''t magically stopped all yelling my toddler does, but it has given us go-to steps in her language, that we go back to again and again, and it has certainly helped. I love how at the end it says "voices are for..." and then lists various things voices are for, my toddler always says "I love you" at the very end and it''s sweet to have that kind of resolution after a screaming episode when we decide to read this book again. Will it solve all yelling? No, but it''s a great and positively peaceful tool to add to your little one''s library.

Focuses on being mad ''loud'' instead of just ''loud''

I work at a daycare and read this daily. The kids and I both have it memorized. I love that the words from this book have helped me understand and communicate with screaming children. I''m able to empathize with them about their emotions and use teaching moments to remind them of the ideas from this book.

To me, this book isn''t just for kids, but for caregivers too. This book isn''t for reading, it''s for living. I try to be like the teacher in the book that days "thank you for using your words, I will help you." (My paraphrased version)

Each of these books has tips for the caregiver in the last two pages. I highly recommend the whole series to all parents, teachers, or caregivers.

We purchased this book shortly after buying another Best Behavior book and seeing my toddler son fall in love with it instantly. The first book arrived two weeks ago; this book arrived just over week ago. While the first book hasn''t made a huge impact yet (I wouldn''t expect it to *that* quickly!), this book was an immediate success. My husband and I are shocked. Our extremely loud two-year-old, who loves to yell and scream for fun, now responds rapidly when we say "shhh!" or remind him about his "inside voice". He actually does the little breathing trick described in the book. This is amazing. My toddler loves this book, and so do I. (My fellow grocery store shoppers don''t know it, but they probably also love this book.)

This book was just delivered today and we’ve read it twice! My four year old is a yeller; excitement and frustration consume her little mind sometimes and she just can’t contain it. I’m so glad I found this book. Today I see her listening and thinking about what she’s doing and why she’s doing it. She’s seeing that it’s not just a concept that Mom and Dad are making up. This reinforces what we’re teaching her and further encourages her to take control of her emotions.

My son is 2 1/2 and definetely loves to yell. We got this book along with hands are not for hitting to read to him when he has bad behavior (yes, we are the parents that read things that say you should not call your child bad, instead say that they have bad behavior.) I like the diversity in the book and the message is simple yet direct. I think every toddler can benefit from this because I''ve learned even the most angelic seeming ones are going through a phase at the toddler age.
